I have ordered several times from Hawthorne. I usually order fabric for children's apparel and it is fabulous. The quilting cotton I have purchased is name brand and top of the line. When shopping Hawthorne is my go to supplier.
...even when paying extra for Priority shipment. I had purchased several times from the company in the past. Their packaging has never been "nice" in any way, especially compared to other Etsy sellers and online quilt shops. But, really - not going to be giving this as a gift to my new quilting friend now. ETA: When you reach out to them, their response (Charlie in particular is something else/inhumane): "tough luck". He said to me (happy to provide email) that "you need to inquire beforehand if you want something not folded". I paid EXTRA for shipping to make sure it arrived o.k., but a customer needs to inquire? Unbelievably horrid individual/business - bet it's actually not "a family", that their whole story is concocted - they are in NY afterall, where much business fraud/lying occurs. Lesson learned! If you are looking for good service, here are some options I've had success with: Fat Quarter Shop, Hancock's of Paducah, Fabric Shoppe Michigan (she's on Etsy and eBay). All nice people that have integrity, which these people were obviously not raised with that being an important virtue.

Tip for consumers:
They will not attempt to make their errors/have horrendous customer service.
We recently ordered fabric from Hawthorne for the first time and their fabric selection is wonderful! We placed an order for many cuts of fabric and the order was correct and sent out quickly. We did notice a problem with one of the fabrics. As soon as I notified them, they responded quickly and replaced it. I think one of the marks of a good business you can only find out when something goes wrong and they were wonderful to work with. I couldn't recommend them enough! Excellent customer service!
I ordered their quilting cotton not knowing what poor quality it was. From the price, I assumed it was high quality. Don't be fooled. It is the poorest quality cotton I have ever used. I washed and carefully dried it hoping it would improve but it did not. Don't waste your money! I'm trying to use it on my table runner pattern but it's so rough and thin that it's hard to even enjoy the process. I'm very surprised that no one had posted any comments about the poor quality.

Hawthorne has been around forever so they are usually the first place you check. I like their real-time inventory, only a few online fabric stores do that. But even though I ordered what was listed, they ran out of inventory. So I didn't have the best experience. If you say there are X yards available then you should have X available. I hate getting the email saying "we don't have what you ordered" because that costs a few days and I usually order my fabric right when I need it.
Wonderful website, wonderful selection, wonderful service! I have always been very happy with the quality and selection of fabrics,
Just be really careful when you receive your order that you measure the cuts and verify that they didn't sell you off-grain cuts. My 1/2 yard cuts ended up measuring 16" once straightened.
I've bought from here twice already and plan to be a frequent customer. Their fabric choice is gorgeous, I love all their features (fabric co-ordinates, projects made, suggested thread, etc), checkout is easy, and shipping is fast. Definitely recommend
