“HUMILIATING EXPERIENCE”

SANDY M.
8/16/16

Our story begins at the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland. Afterwards we drove the rented mini-van east to explore our great nation. Seven hours later we dropped bags at the Hay-Adams Hotel in the nations capital. The Hay-Adams lacks in modern convenience it otherwise makes up in proximity to the White House. My first blink upon entering the antique-filled inn was the stink-eye from a couple I can only describe as Tad and Buffy: type-cast from an 80s John Hughes film replete with popped collar and shoulders adorned with pink sweaters. In fairness seven hours in a minivan; sporting an ancient Nirvana t-shirt and flip flops, indeed, I suffered from a lack of D. C. haute couture. Ignoring the glares, we tiredhuddledtechnology company ownersyearning to breathe freeimbedded our exhausted kids in a quaint room with room service and a movie. Soon mom-and-dad were directed to a charming basement bar; no doubt, legendary stories of secret rendezvouses between a Kennedy and a starlet resides. Friends from our Cali neighborhood visiting D. C. met us at the bar. Two hours into our uneventful evening and waiting forever for service sitting in a booth my wife finally went to the bar to find out if we were going to get any service the bartender said the manager decided not to serve you anymore, not sure why he didn't tell you (?) that the bar was no longer serving us? My wife was furious as I was merely miffed at the loss of rare parent-time better spent elsewhere. Call me dense but the glares at registration to the horrid service, it was apparent that our family was not welcomed at the Hay-Adams Hotel. Anecdotal evidence gives credence to the assumption that the Hay-Adams is merely a gathering spot (I hear the restaurant is fabulous) and NOT a family-friendly hotel. At the time of this rant we have not been given a reason for the disrespectful manner which we were subjected to at the Hay-Adams Hotel. (Perhaps we can look forward to a Hay-Adams justification here in writing as it was absent during our brief visit.) Note: During a phone conversation with a delightful Hay-Adams staff member, it was confirmed that indeed it is strongly encouraged to walk softly when discussing political leanings at the Hay-Adams Hotel. To my point: Profit trumps (no pun) customer service and soon we received a bill for our stay at the Hay-Adams Hotel. Receiving a bill after experiencing the humiliation caused to my family qualified as the last straw and the reason for my tea-in-the-harbor rant. Old Nirvana t-shirt notwithstanding we are blessed to have stayed in some of the worlds finest hotels and are welcomed with open arms. (Name drop: Claridges, London). As a family we are grateful to be able to enjoy such sojourns and show our gratitude by compensating hard working staff at aforementioned legendary lodging. (I compensated the Hay-Adams registration staff for finding us alternative accommodations while being shooed out their door.) Its with sadness that I must post a negative review of our all-to-brief stay at the Hay-Adams Hotel. The front desk staff found us another hotel and assured as we wouldnt be charged for not staying in the roomsbut they billed our credit card anyway.
