“I wanted to like hungryroot”

I tried hungryroot since a great Merchant Offer appeared as one of my credit card benefits, and saw mostly good reviews. The good for me was delivery arrived on time, healthy food options are abundant, veggies arrive looking fresh, and plenty of veggie options. Also, convenient meal options that don't take long to prepare, and it's fun to try new things. The cons for me were the veggies don't last long, so we'd have to be consuming them all right away. For example, asparagus was part of a dinner. We made that dinner within a few days of receiving our first delivery, and the asparagus' best by date was still 10 days away, but several stalks already went bad (tips wet and gross) so had to throw some away. Also - the asparagus were extremely thin, which we like when sauted or steamed, but the recipe was to roast them at 450 degrees for 25-30 minutes. They turned to hard sticks. Another example is we currently have shaved brussels for a southwest meal. Their best by date is 2/4/24, but by 1/31/24 they are starting to turn color and I doubt we'll be able to use them. Another con was they have an item on my "delivered" list, but it wasn't in the box. That was incredibly easy to fix, go online and select item, choose help, they have an option to add $6 to my wallet. The bad news is that's not a refund, it's a discount off of a future order. And I'm canceling, so losing that $6. Another con for me was the very first meal they recommended was pasta with vodka sauce. Okay, sounds great. But between ordering and me receiving the delivery 5 days later, I see they have a RECALL on vodka sauce for specific lot numbers! I don't think the one received was part of the recall, but still created some anxiety before even getting any food. We received grapes, and I thought oh these are nice, let's check out the supplier. The first thing on their website is their LISTERIA recall. Not on grapes, but on other types of fruit. Later I also saw that on hungryroot's website. Hopefully we weren't affected by either recall, but still makes me wary of the suppliers hungryroot chooses. Another con for me was several items that sounded interesting were out of stock. I did skip our second delivery to give us time to try all the things from our first delivery, which was easy to do, then just canceled before the second delivery. I think it's a great concept, but I think I'd use it just as a here-and-there for certain things, but most of those things I can find cheaper and fresher at local stores. But here-and-there doesn't equate to the $65 minimum charge, $70 minimum for free shipping. I'm sure there's a niche of folks who would really like this service. I'm glad we didn't pay the full $120 price for our one and only delivery.

The meals are absolutely yummy and for the first time in months I feel great after eating. I was having horrible gastrointestinal issues before so I honestly didn't know what to do since I had no time to spare to cook a healthier meal. Their meals actually help me so much and I'm so grateful for them!

Hungryroot Honest Review: Not really worth it.
1. I did not see a savings in food costs
2. Found the sauces and dressings to be either bland and one note, or just super heavy on a particular spice/flavor. Not balanced at all, makes it less than ideal.
3. Tried several different drinks in the form of protein shakes and smoothies, I liked 1 and that was the one that was just like drinking thick orange juice.
4. The snacks are very hit in miss. Some do taste really good, some taste terrible and some based on what they are made from and taste like, while not bad, should be forced to have a name that represents it correctly. I understand, it is a substitute for something, but it has to at least taste like that thing to carry the name.
5. Sometimes the meat was not representative of the pictures. Such as flat, squished 2 ounce salmon tail or shank fillet being sent when hot smoked salmon portion (different cut, with skin on) was ordered.
6. I did like the amount of fresh'ish vegetables. It was a really good quantity. I say fresh'ish because it's pre-cut and sealed.
7. I was ok with the 2 ounce meat portions per person, my husband who works a very physical job was not.
8. I did like that there were several options to chose from in each category.
9. I did like that they have specialty diet options for plant based, gluten free etc.
10. I did like that they include recipe cards.

The service at this place is unlike any other food delivery company in the states because they deliver the food so fast! It is absolutely unbelievable and I'm so glad cuz I can get my food fast since I tend to order food at the last minute. Highly recommended to all out there, you will not be disappointed

I like HungryRoot for their sauces and meat substitutes. Pumfu sounds weird but is delicious. Love the seasoned tofu! I like that you can pick the items like groceries instead of having to do the meals. I've tried many of the meal delivery companies and HungryRoot is my favorite.

What I love the most about them is the customize option that is aailable, which is very helpful when you want to personalize your delivery and the meals you want from them. Whenever I don't have enough time to prep a meal and to hit the grocery, Hungryroot is what I turn to in order to make sure I can have something healthy.

I've been a Hungry Root subscriber for the last 4 months and have had a very inconsistent experience. When it works well it's a godsend; a variety of healthy, easy to cook meals that are easy to portion, arrive at my door each week. But it seems that it often does't go according to plan. With HR you subscribe for a number of meals and snacks each week. You are presented with a list of meals and given the option to change the list up until a date (3 to 6 days prior to delivery) on which the order is locked in and you are charged. HR frequently makes random substitutions of items after the order is supposed to lock, often sending random grocery items instead of a new recipe. They also occasionally try to substitute a lower value item for what was ordered (bag of spinach substituted for chicken salad). Delivery in December has been abysmal, with an order due a week before Christmas never arriving, and the next one, scheduled to arrive 10 days later, being pushed back 4 days the minute after I was charged for it. As good as the food is, the inconsistency has caused me to start looking for alternatives.
