“When I graduated college, I thought my life is set”

Joe B.
11/8/13

When I graduated college, I thought my life is set. I am going to put my psychology degree to good use and get a job in social services, and in my spare time, I can use my creative writing minor to help me write fiction. After a few months, I cannot find a job in my field of psychology and begin to feel defeated. I decide to be productive and start on that writing career I have always dreamed of having. Unfortunately, I would start, but never finish a project. At this time, my aunt is pursuing a career as a literary agent, and she really wants me to be her client. She puts me on her writing schedule, but I still cannot finish a project. So she sends me a link to Myindicators.com. After ten weeks of the program, I am going to finish a story, and it is my success story with Myindicators.com My Indicators was my creativity savior. It stopped the biggest enemy of my life, myself and my tendency to procrastinate. My personal scorecard made my goals more tangible to me. In college, I was able to write, because I had a clear deadline, and there were consequences to not reaching my goal. For My Indicators, a negative trend graph is a major consequence. I am a very visual person, and as a psychology graduate, I appreciate the trend graphs. It helps me assess my goals to determine if I should approach them differently. I set my scorecard goals in phases. For the first three weeks, I created a writing prompt indicators. I figure that I should get into the habit of writing again before I pursue writing my own fiction. My first week's minimum goal is to do 14 writing prompts. I achieve my goal and actually do 17. So I up my minimum goal to 21. Unfortunately, I only get to 19. I am disappointed in myself, but I am more determined than ever to reach my goal. My scorecard are great motivations. When I did not reach my writing goals before, I just shrug and say, "I'll get it next time," but next time never came until I signed up for my indicators. So on week 3, I surpass my goal by writing 26 prompts. Now it is time for me to new indicator and move to a new phase of my writing. I set a goal of writing one polished chapter a week. A polished chapter is a complete chapter that has been edited at least twice. On week 5, I move to two polished chapters. I keep adding a chapter every week until I get to four chapters a week. Now, at week 10, I am at 20 chapters. That is two chapters above my goal. I am only five chapters away from completely my novel's first draft. WOW! My aunt is thrilled, and I am happy to see the finish line. Once I notice how keeping a personal scorecards is affecting my writing goals. During week 5, I decided to create indicators for other areas of my life. Due to my grief from not being able to find a job, I become a little antisocial. I decide to correct this by adding additional indicators to set goals. I begin by setting a goal of at least one face to face social interaction in a week and at least ten interactions via telephone or social media. When I say social media interaction, I am not referring to a quick comment on someone's status. I define my interactions as at least three messages exchanged with a person in 24 hours. I know that is specific, but I have notice that the more specific my indicator is the greater chance I have at completely my goal. During college, I pack on more than the standard freshman 15. Instead of going to a gym or changing my diet, I just buy a bigger pair of jeans. I keep saying that I am going to change my diet and start yoga again. Before I filled out my scorecard, my yoga mat had months of dust on it. Now, I exercise regularly and 80% of my food intake is healthy. My outlook on life is changing, and I am more determined to jump start both my writing career and my career as a social worker. In week 5, I start an indicators to help me keep track of my job hunting activities. I set a goal of writing at least 20 cover letters and sending out at least 30 resumes a week. My goal is to get at least one job interview a week. Before MyIndicators.com, I did have a few job interviews, but not as many as I have now. Now, I can say that I am truly a success story. At this moment, I am entertaining two job offers. I love having this type of problem.
