“Heavily biased moderation”

Nick B.
2/5/24

Moderation of current affairs debates is heavily biased in favour of leftists. Really not worth signing up at all unless you want to discuss stray cats and bin collections. Awful site

At first I thought this site was an excellent idea, but the more I use it, the more I am concerned. If you ask neighbours for recommendations of companies, you get companies responding offering their services. As you can glean this information from Google, it is really not helpful.

Admin allocate you to a neighbourhood. In my case they allocated me to the next door neighbourhood and when I tried to change it, the message popped up: "You can't change your neighbourhood."

Recently I posted my concerns about a local plumbing and heating company. The shower pump they fitted 2.5yrs ago stopped working and got very hot. When I claimed under the 5yr warranty, I had to send pictures of the pump and the fitting. The manufacturers response was that it had been fitted incorrectly and thus invalidated the warranty. The manufacturers listed three faults/omissions in the fitting. Nextdoor Admin removed the review after a couple of days, not, they told me, because it violated any rules or guidelines, but because they have a policy that if a company asks for such posts to be removed, Admin "may" consider it. I offered to provide proof, but they didn't want to know.

A few days later, I responded to another neighbours comment, criticising admin, and told him of my experience and concerns. I have just discovered that my account has been suspended for a few days! I have been polite and respectful throughout and never had a comment removed for breaching their guidelines!

I find it of huge concern that admin won't allow criticism of either companies or themselves. Sadly, whilst I like to help other neighbours where possible, this site is too dangerous to remain on and I will be closing my account.

Moderators/leads in my neighbourhood frequently display open political bias in their subjective enforcement of the guidelines, quickly removing comments or ads that are posted by conservative members of the community, while leaving up entire threads discussing national politics from a left/liberal angle.
It appears they are happy to stretch the guidelines to their absolute limit in order to silence people they disagree with, while allowing undeniable breaches of the guidelines by those they politically align with.
The result is an echo chamber that is very unwelcoming for some sections of the community, and moreover there is no transparency whatsoever in how the moderators/leads make their decisions.

Tip for consumers:
Use it to notify people about your missing cat or if you need a gardener, but bear in mind it's full of trolls and the moderators tolerate it.

Never forget that Nextdoor is an advertising business and so, legally, its first allegiance must be to its shareholders. 2nd, 3rd & 4th will be directors, executive management, staff etc... then users ("members") i. E "us".

We, "users"/"members", are "the product" - Nextdoor sells our "advertising eyeballs" to advertisers for money. Nextdoor is free to us in the sense that we don't have a direct-debit with our bank paying for our Nextdoor membership. But it's not free. Our collective "advertising eyeballs" (c. 27 million of us!) are worth money - and that's how Nextdoor *makes* its money - by selling our eyeballs to advertisers for money. Local "Moderators" and "Leads" are, essentially, Nextdoor's "enforcers" of what's "good for Nextdoor's revenues and shareholders". They don't get paid in money; they get paid by being given a sense of power and control over their own local "fifedom" - and you're in that fifedom. We know the old saying about what power does...

So it's no surprise that the "moderating" on Nextdoor is less than perfect, in turn making Nextdoor less than perfect, especially if you're looking for something fair and balanced and objectively managed.

Nextdoor does perform some useful functions. It'll find you a plumber, help find your lost cat, recommend an electrician - lots of things - but it comes at quite a high price. You might not feel like you're buying (paying for) Nextdoor's serices, but you are ("advertising eyeballs", remember). So "caveat emptor"!

Use it for sure; but never forget what it really is.

Would like to know my rights. Just been to the boots store. I looked at men's deodorizers. There was a set of body spray Ted baker. I opened the box and closed it. I was carried this box and looked at another items. An employee comes up and says. You just stole stuff Show me the bags. I stand up in shock and look at her. I say you do not have the right to check my bags, I did not steal anything. She continues to say no, I saw, show the bags and transmits on the walkie-talkie. Here in the men's department is theft. I would like to add that I can't see well and I look at things pretty close. So the manager came, The costumer service said check the cameras, this woman stole something., check her bags immediately We went down to the office, I was shaking all over and crying. The manager began to say that she actually did not say that I stole something. I say I will sue them. They never looked at camera. I automatically began to empty the bags and show what was inside. To which he said not to do it.By the way, they didn't even open and check the deodorant box. They accused me of stealing but didn't even check to see if I stole the deodorants. This is embarrassing! I still can't believe that happened. The costumer service woman was very rude and blamed me. So basically they blamed me for stealing stuff without any evidence. In front of the people around. Everyone has been stared at me. I felt so bad.

I have had to close my account.
I left something on my doorstep to be collected by someone from Nextdoor, unfortunately due to their daft address policy, this item was 'stolen' by somebody who saw our conversation and even though i had Pm'd my address, they then got my road name and google searched me by name and came by and took the item.
I have tried kahuti.com BUT it is not a UK site, it is American and needs more members in my area, I am plugging away with it. I have also joined mystreetlink.co.uk which is a UK operated site set up by an ex Streetlifer and seems to be the closest to the old Streetlife we knew and loved
