“This is a scam and they will access your data”

Since we were having trouble logging into our router, my wife googled nighthawk router login when the normal netgear routerlogin.net portal would not connect. nighthawklogin.net showed up in the google search and we were led to believe we were talking to Netgear. Total scam. While we were talking to "tech support" we granted remoted access to my computer so their "technican" could "diagnose" the issue and then spent about a half hour while their "network" tools had complete control of our computers. They then presented a detailed description of the problem and located and connected to all our devices. After 30 minutes, they informed us it would cost us $400 to reconfigure, at which point we opted to buy another brand instead since it was cheaper. I repeated several times that we bought a router from them and they affirmed my understanding. The next day, when we decided to talk to a supervisor, my wife noticed that the site looked completely different when she googled "netgear" and I realized we were hacked. I don't know what their intention was, but I do know that all my data had been exposed and I don't know what or where the software they installed on my machine is. After talking to the real Netgear today, we were informed that the "diagnosis" was impossible and that no tool existed that would present the data that they were showing on my screen. (i. E. this appears to have been a video show of some kind while something else was happening under the hood.) Since they represented themselves as the company I bought the router from (Netgear) and gained access to my computer, this would be a classic social hack of our entire network.

I was having trouble with my Netgear Nighthawk router and logged into Netgear -was transferred somehow to https://nighthawklogin.net/ and the chat person said that the tech department would help me via phone so I could also be on my computer to reset the router. The tech called me immediately. I was told to log into join.zoho.in He changed my router password, insisted I need not change it back "because all routers have the same password" and then logged into my computer terminal to prove I had "network congestion" See below where he actually CREATED a button code to show me the issue and then wanted to charge me $249 to fix the made up issue. He also had tried to get into different files very quickly while on my computer. The number he called from was *******752 and the pictures show the scam... Watch out - these people are slick and savvy liars.

I too thought that I was speaking with a Netgear technician as this company's very professional website complete with chat bot that is chalk full of excellent information, and uses the logo and colour schemes of the bonafide Netgear site (which should be enough fodder for Netgear to get them taken down).

As promised by the chat bot, the technician called me back within 15 minutes. After I granted him access to my computer, he ran some very standard command line commands, and proceeded to attempt to show me that my router had a duplicate IP address to another device on my network, and for only $125 dollars, he could fix that. Our remote session got disconnected 4 or 5 times which he blamed on other issues in my network. When he made his pitch "I will fix all the issues, and only at the end, do you have to decide if you want to pay me when I take you to a secure site for payment" is when I got wise. This was completely uncharacteristic of how major hardware manufacturers operate their out of warranty servicing. I also knew that I was not having network issues.

At that moment I went back to the original website: https://nighthawklogin.net/ and found at the very bottom of a very long very slick webpage the disclaimer: "Nighthawkrouterlogin.net is an independent service provider... disclaims any affiliation with. Brand". I asked the technician the name of the actual company I was dealing with and he refused to tell me! I thanked him for his time and hung up the phone and disconnected the remote session before he could install any spyware etc.

PS. I fixed my own router issue after finding the real Netgear site and walking through the troubleshooting steps.
