“This is a great resource for anyone camping or hiking...”

Chris O.
9/6/10

This is a great resource for anyone camping or hiking or backpacking, living or vacationing in a vehicle, or simply wanting an off-grid way to cook at home, as in a power outage, for example. The site is packed with scientific information -- which the author is honest enough to admit, is often debatable and may be inaccurate at times -- about how various types of stoves work, how various types of fuel burn, what causes the dangerous carbon monoxide and how to avoid it, simply heaps of graphs and chemical formulae which thankfully, you can safely ignore if you're just here to find out what sort of stove is best for you. The site is home to the backpacker's notorious DIY alcohol stove, construction of which is explained in considerable detail. All variations are shown, and there are links to variations designed by others too. The alcohol stove, for those who've never heard of it, may be as simple as a drinks or food can and a pot holder. Alcohol will burn at room temperature and is one of the safest fuels you can use, and can be purchased all over the place at Home Depot or OSH or any other hardware store. The site describes and illustrates the various types of alcohol that are readily available, with warnings where appropriate, and has a complete photographic assembly guide for a clever dual catfood can stove that comes at least $60 cheaper than the one you'll find in the fancy camping store. Cat not supplied.
