They did not honor my unsubscribe requests from their newsletters. I never subscribed, they don't seem to care, and send stuff sometimes multiple times per day.

  • Termistopusa

8/26/22

Termistop is the USA outlet of an Australian company. They sell primarily little stainless steel gaskets that shut up the gap between an underground pipe and a concrete slab. No issues. I never signed up for their now-defunct service: no need for that, I just buy the mesh.

Tip for consumers:
Termites eat wood. Chemicals only work for a while.

  • Straight Talk Wireless

7/29/22

Ok, I had StraightTalk for several years, for a fixed wireless phone. It worked for the rural area I needed it for. The problem came when needing to move to another company.

StraightTalk's web button to get a PIN to release the phone number to another company was broken, and it took in excess of 6 hours of getting bounced to various departments between Straight Talk and Tracfone® to get it straight.

Hold times are long.

They don't hire enough people to answer the phones.

Tip for consumers:
Call for service during odd hours.
Learn French, Vietnamese or other non-English languages for talking to customer service.

Products used:
Wireless landline base station.

  • Tacklifetools

Their website promises a good warranty, and 24 hour response to support or warranty issues. When I needed warranty support their phone went to voicemail, email not returned for 10 days, and the web form for support would not submit.

Tip for consumers:
Lots of decent tools. No support.

  • Lnkd.in

1/22/22

I received a spam text message, asking if I had authorized a ZELLE transfer. If "no" I was supposed to follow a link to this domain. Scam.

  • Decorsday

Through Bing I found a low price on an Infrared Camera here, but it was a scam. Paypal refunded the purchase price.

Tip for consumers:
The main site might be legit, but the below cost products on Bing are not.

  • RepeaterStore

7/14/19

I purchased a fixed cell phone repeater from RepeaterStore, and received after sale support. It's refreshing in a world of online shopping run by AI's, to have people who actually know the products.

I used https://www.cellmapper.net/ to find my local towers, aim the antenna, and get a solid signal.

Tip for consumers:
Download "cellmapper" for Android to get straight what cell tower is where.

  • GetHuman

7/2/19

The one company you can't get a human at is GetHuman.com. Oh the irony.

I tried to use GetHuman.com to contact the IRS, and to contact UPS. In both cases the call never went through. The only result was a bevy of followup email asking me if IRS or UPS resolved my issue, and leaving silent the question of if GetHuman.com worked.

I eventually called both direct, and got humans.

Then I tried PayPal. The site counted down from 40 to 6 minutes, and then nothing. Never worked for me.

  • Ic3.gov

If filling about a form about a scam makes you feel better, go for it.

There's no clear path for any sort of followup. It's just submitting a form that in theory a law enforcement agency might look at. I found the local law enforcement won't investigate Internet scams at all, they just send you to ic3.gov. Pointless.

  • Artistic Checks

12/1/18

This is one of a number of seemingly independent check printing companies, that are all operated by the "Direct Checks Unlimited Sales Network" and use the same shopping cart. Like the others the shopping cart is designed to trick you into paying extra fees. The promise of 'free shipping' is fake, as there is a handling fee -- and there are fees that go up the greater the discount code you get.

I prefer dealing with companies that have up front pricing, and true "sales".

  • The Because Market

11/30/18

The Because Market (formerly Hexa & Co) provided garments to my father. While I notified them of the death, and the credit card stopped working, they kept shipping for two months. Then, said it had been too long to take a return or issue a refund.

  • Truthfinder.com

10/14/18

You don't really get anything at the free level -- it will just waste your time.
And as others have noted, you'll be scammed at the paid level.
It's a scam site.

  • US Dog Registry

10/2/18

This site will do everything to try and leave you the impression their "registration" products for dogs are necessary. For the real deal see ADA.gov, where you'll find:

"There are individuals and organizations that sell service animal certification or registration documents online. These documents do not convey any rights under the ADA and the Department of Justice does not recognize them as proof that the dog is a service animal."

  • Therapy Pet

10/2/18

This site claims to provide certification of emotional support animals. The site is carefully worded to avoid the following fact, drawn from the official ADA.gov fact sheet on the matter:

"There are individuals and organizations that sell service animal certification or registration documents online. These documents do not convey any rights under the ADA and the Department of Justice does not recognize them as proof that the dog is a service animal."

  • Sittercity

1/3/14

The site appeared to be a great resource, I found a number of sitters that met my need. On paying for a subscription I contacted each of the listed sitters. None responded. Of the sitters that contacted me, none met my clearly stated condition (speaking a particular language). These were stale, fake listings, or sitters who did not read. This was not useful.
