“Horrible, cancelled reservation 11 days before date. Hotel charged me, said it wasn't cancelled”

I made a reservation on March 7 for March 18. I cancelled later that day because a friend offered to have us stay with them. Spoke to the same man twice to verify cancellation. I was shocked to see a charge from the hotel was posted the evening of March 18! Hotel said reservation wasn't cancelled.
