Yes use the widgets, they come with the theme. Just define a text widget and write whatever html code you need there, can be even adsense ads

This is certainly possible. You have the flexible and easy customization that comes with wordpress. I myself have made a completely different homepage, which lists clickable auction events with dates, thumbs and location.
