Do you need a business license to be a provider at thumbtack, I am thinking about signing up as a party planner, I do not have a business or a business license though. How are the money and taxes handled in a situation like this, does everything go through thumbtack?

We love to see that you’re interested in joining Thumbtack, Grace! Your party planning business sounds like it will be a blast. When it comes to having a license, it's up to each professional to determine what licenses are necessary and follow their local, state and federal laws. I recommend checking with your state to see if a business license is needed for your service.

Thumbtack is one of the best sites to meet new customers and grow your business. Robert S. Gave a really good explanation of how we work. You can sign up and receive requests for free, and you only pay us when you send the customer a quote. Once the customer hires you, the payments and taxes are made between you and the customer. This is a great way to connect with the customer and build an extensive referral network.

We wish you the best of luck with growing your business. Have an amazing day!

You pay a fee to thumbtack for the listing. Most states require that you have a business licence for tax purposes. In most states you have collect sales tax.

Hello Grace C.,

You are not required to have a business licence to be a service provider at Thumbtack.com. The only monies that are "handled" are the leads that you decide to bid on. You bid on interested customers job requests with "credits". Credits are currently $1.67 per credit, (when bought at the amount of credits needed for one bid to place), and a certain amount of credits are required to actually bid on the job. It will show you the amount of credits needed to place a bid prior to any credit purchase for that job. Credit purchases are simply charged to a debit/credit card of your choosing. There are no taxes that I am aware of that are addressed through Thumbtack to be paid. Remember that you can be bidding against 4 other service professionals in your field for the job, and they are just a general idea of the final cost for your services, rather than an absolute quote. To get any contact to the potential customer, a bid must be placed, then contact information is provided (depending on the potential customer's preference). I hope this helps... best wishes.

Why is thumbtack in the business of hooking up customers to service providers if they can't even understand basic jurisdictional regulations. Your state does not have a dog in the fight if all you want is a simple business license. If you live in a city go to the city commissioner of revenue. Same thing if you live in a county. The state is only interested in corporations. If you are incorporated then you must contact your states corporation commission and register there.
