“HORRIBLE - they blame the customer and drag their feet (Home Owners Ins_”

The advice I would give to any homeowner, would be to AVOID Auto Owners insurance. Consumer Affairs has them rated with 1.8 stars. Before considering this company, take the time to go read reviews by actual customers with real experiences dealing with Auto Owners. The negative far outweighs the positive. Pay a few extra bucks, do the research and choose a different insurance carrier. Auto Owners insured my house in 2019. One night after we had left the property, a fire started. I was called and told about it by a neighbor, and was able to get to the property that night while the crews were still there. I called Auto Owners and filed my claim, and from day one, it has been a nightmare. Here we are more than 8 months later, with nothing resolved other than asking for more documents each time. From the very beginning they have tried to tell me that my kids must have snuck off and smoked pot and lit it on fire, or my kid lit incense on the stair case and set it on fire and when I disagreed with all of that, saying my kids would not do that, Doug Hunt with Auto Owners said "I think you lit your house on fire". But mostly, they have simply ignored me. I finally hired an attorney. When he contacted them, they chose that moment to demand every financial record I had ever possessed going back years. So we spent hours finding and copying everything, and sent it to them. Then they accused me of arson. So they are clearly not working for the customer. They push and try to intimidate to get you to back off on your claim. So here I sit, 5 months later. The house had to be secured because it has been broken into and items were stolen. I get reports from neighbors that people are STILL coming to the house and taking things. When I asked Auto Owners about it, they said that would be another claim, with another deductible even though the fire is what opened the house up to the break ins and theft to begin with! If you are with Auto-Owners, I recommend dropping them BEFORE something happens to you, and you need insurance you can count on.
