“Safe space”

As a person in a country where being myself is potentially deadly, it's safest to stay closeted. This website, offered me company and room to express myself freely. Even while I was still figuring out exactly who I am, going through that was better and a little less scary because there were people to virtually be there for me.

“Uneducated and unhelpful posters”

I left this forum years ago, and couldn't feel any happier. One of the forum workers wanted me to stay, but this forum didn't meet my needs. If you're having doubts about this forum, you're not wrong. It was ridiculous when two male posters on empty closets jumped to the conclusion that I wasn't a real healthcare professional, just because I asked a question and wanted stimulating conversation. Anyone working in healthcare knows that we have problems like anyone else. It's stupid to assume that all healthcare professionals act a certain way outside of work. If these two men are comfortable interacting with strangers online, they should understand that others shouldn't be stigmatized for airing their thoughts out. There's nothing wrong with asking for a second opinion, no matter where you are in life. Nobody knows it all. I was also surprised at some of the lack of education on sex, especially by female posters. One adult female thought that needing foreplay during sex meant that you had a low sex drive. Really? Women with high sex drives can need a lot of warming up too. That female poster's comment can lead a lot of women to feel self-conscious over something that's normal and well-documented (needing foreplay before intercourse). I hope the people on empty closets can be more educated on important topics, like sexuality, life stressors, and knowing that each person has a different life experiences. If you are genuinely trying to help, be careful about how you communicate. Be willing to admit that you're wrong. Listen. Ask questions before assuming. Overall, I was not impressed with the type of support that this forum was offering.

Tip for consumers:
this site is for those questioning or those that know they are LGBTQIA+
