“Having been homeless myself for two weeks at the time...”

Chris O.
6/25/10

Having been homeless myself for two weeks at the time of writing, no doubt my many followers (zero, actually, but even a houseless person may dream for free) will be interested to know that I'm still surviving out here. Amongst the online resources for the homeless that I've found, this particular site offers some good tips and practical advice for the accidentally-homeless and the homeless who want to remain so, within the context of society, rather than those who want to escape from it all and abandon everything that society might offer them. It's written for an American audience, but all the suggestions can be used elsewhere in similar Western countries. It doesn't cover living up mountains in Tibet in winter or the jungles of the Amazon in summer, nor does it involve esoteric survivalist techniques for use in the event of nuclear war. It does not review expensive, lightweight hiking and backpacking gear that nobody can afford. It does offer a reasonably smart and resourceful person a bunch of straightforward ideas that will save maybe a week or two of having to work it out for him- or herself, though, and believe me, those first couple of weeks are crucial. Although the author is a proponent of being houseless, he does not attempt to encourage people to leave home as an escape from their families or parents. He does offer help for those already out there, so that they may be safer, but he doesn't encourage homelessness as a way of life just because he says so. If it's thrust upon you, as it was upon me, or you have already made the choice and are out there, it will save you a lot of time and give you some reassurance that your chances of survival are perhaps a lot better than you might think.
