Olympus DAO lives in the liminal space between economics, game theory, financial speculation and behavioral psychology. What does that mean? I have no idea either and I suspect neither do the creators. However, they have a great energetic community and are working on real technology that could change decentralized finance and therefore the world. Olympus offers, among other things, ridiculously high headline staking APYs (the APY gets paid out through dilution of shares and treasury funds) which attracts financial speculators. But one of the chief innovations of the protocol is that it allows the DAO to own its own liquidity, thereby allowing it to make money off each speculator's transactions. This money can then be invested in assets in the treasury (Dai for example) which is then used to back the OHM tokens. As the APY inevitably comes down to earth over time, it's not clear how the DAO will evolve or be able to maintain the same level of excitement and activity, but its technology has already spun off several other DAOs including KlimaDAO (which buys tokenized carbon offsets instead of Dai) so regardless of the future Olympus will have played an important role in the future of defi.
