I scheduled a routine cleaning with Peak Family Dental Care in Cottonwood because my regular dentist's office stopped taking our insurance. I wasn't looking for any sort of diagnostic exam and had absolutely no issues with my oral health at all. I was asked to fill out a mound of paperwork before the exam and provided a thorough health background as requested. When I arrived for the cleaning, I was told this office does things differently and I would first need to sit through a meeting with the dentist before a routine cleaning could be scheduled. I sat through Dr. Shanahan's twenty minute long spiel wherein he chewed gum with his mouth open like a horse and went through my health history to cherry pick various products and services the office has to offer. It felt like I was going to be sold a time share. After that I underwent extensive x-rays and photos of my teeth from every angle imaginable. I was told my teeth looked great, other than a tooth which would eventually need a cap on it. I was then scheduled for a cleaning the following week.

When I arrived, the hygienist said they'd been looking over my x-rays and determined I needed scaling done, which would be an extra charge not covered by my insurance and I would need to pay upfront for this. I asked why this was never brought up during the 30 minutes of consultation when the dentist picked and scratched at literally every tooth in my mouth. The guy literally poked in front and back of every tooth calling out gum pocket numbers of 1,2 and an occasional 3 and told me my mouth looked good. I walked out of the office with a treatment plan that spoke about a future crown and a cleaning. That's it!

They tried to convince me that "they just noticed it after reviewing my file" and it is in my treatment plan. Maybe this would have convinced me, but come to find out this is the exact same bait and switch routine they played on another patient of theirs that I spoke with. The old bait and switch swindle. There was never anything in my treatment plan that mentioned scaling.

Apparently, it takes a lengthy sales pitch, 18 x-rays, 10 photos and then a gum scaling before they will even do a simple cleaning. While this may be a great scheme to pad the charges to the insurance company, I find it extremely dishonest and straight up shady.

Take a look at their Google reviews. They are obvioulsy bought and paid for as any negative review is quickly buried by a dubious "new" review which is a copy/past of older positive reviews. More shady practices.

If you are looking for a sweaty twenty minute barrage of sales pitches about mouth pieces, dental implants and snoring sleep studies and want to make 3 trips back and forth to an office to get a standard routine cleaning - Peak Family Dental Care is perfect! If shiesty sleazy salesmen aren't what you're looking for, do yourself a favor and find another dental office.

Tip for consumers:
Do not make the mistake of choosing this dental practice
