Portfolio Recovery Associates, LLC made an agreement with a government agency in 2015 in which they reimbursed people who paid off alleged debts that were not verifiable. There was about $12M in reimbursements and another $8M to the government.
While still under that agreement, PRA made dozens or hundreds of calls to numbers associated with me about an alleged debt. PRA had no account level documentation at the time it tried to collect $2,297.63 from me. PRA has yet to produce anything that says what the debt paid for or what my agreement with the credit card company said.
I filed a suit against them in Federal District Court in the Eastern District of Arkansas, 4:21-cv-*******-LPR.
I hope other people who are harassed by this company will file suit as well. Don't let your attorney settle for a token award. If you are good at following rules, like I am, you may be able to prevail if you file on your own behalf.
PRA fights dirty. But my response is to file a second suit or supplemented suit for abuse of process.
Document everything and tape record conversations if that is legal in your state.
The attached video is of a call that PRA made to a California number. I later found that because I was not in California when the call was made, it was legal to record. But it shows that I asked PRA to stop calling from a recorded line. PRA refused to honor my request, even thinking I was in California.
Together we may stop or slow down the junk debt buyer's abusive practices.
Tip for consumers:
You are not the first person who received calls from this company without any knowledge of the alleged debt. Listen to Youtube videos by John Watt and other consumer protection attorneys. Then pursue justice.
