The American Connectivity Program is a great thing. It provides Internet services to homes that meet certain guidelines therefore giving access to all who otherwise could not afford the ridiculous pricing of some providers. So, as usual when there is something thing good afoot and available to Joe and Joany Consumer, the feeding frenzy begins.
Let's talk about Whoop Connect. So here is a company that I am not quite sure where based, I don't quite think they are sourced in the states.
They are on the ACP meal bus as a provider of services. They're hook, sign up and get a free tablet. Now most people, myself included, think " Oh boy the Internet and a FREE TABLET! Eeéeée! STOP!.…... Shouldn't we ask " what's the catch. Hell no it's the Internet and a FREE TABLET!
Sign me up. Worse permission ever.
So the tablet comes, it's a tiny bit bigger than the new cell phones. And I have no idea who makes these inadequate pieces of technology. The sim is already installed so all need doing is turn her on and voila. Now let's input our personal information and data, easy enough... Wait, who is this Administrator? Sennco DPC? I thought Whoop Connect was the provider, T-Mobile is the service network and I, consumer am the admin.
Nothing was further from true.
The tablet is under substandard and shouldn't be used. It looks weeks and hours to remove Sennco DPC as admin. Leaving a feeling that ponders is this tablet stolen. I can tell it was a refurbished item. While I have no conflict with donations or second sale, stolen things are another beast. And though Whoop Connect stated that there is no access by anyone to my data, that is not what the tablet says.
As for service, the only Internet available is by hotspot on the damn tablet. You are not afforded the privilege of being able to have the broadband or Internet experience in your home or on any of your other devices.
Your speed via T-Mobile is supposed to be 4G, on the tablet you are lucky to get between 2-3. And even that lags. The camera does not work but one way, so no selfies, unless you can set the timer and run in front of the thing. The mics are grayed out and the admin can remove the bar. But who is the admin, it's not me, won't be you... Then who?
Summarized conclusion, firstly do not chose Whoop Connect at all, their techs and CSRs though apologetic are trained to be that way in a feeble attempt to enhance the customer experience. Don't fall for it! Secondly remember that the program is offered by the government, so all of these companies have signed up as legitimate service providers and a lot of them are not! And lastly do your research. Familiarize yourself with the pros and cons of any potential provider you choose. Free is just a hook, strategically placed in the pond.
And if your are on the ACP program be mindful that if you sign into a provider you must stay with the provider for 30 calendar days before you are allowed to transfer to another, and without Internet access, no access without using a hotspot that seems like an eternity with hell on your heels.
And there is one dishonorable mention. TracFone who refused to provide service to on of their own phones as it was locked, for a reason they could not provide and they would unlock a phone owned for 6 years, one of their own, a 35.00 phone for 78.00 dollars. Needles to say that conversation did not end well for them.
