“They only care about money”

Ana D.

There's something wrong with the customer service at this store. I was looking for an ipad for a specific purpose, and I was talking to one of the staff who politely answered my questions in good English about a model I was looking at. The staff never made any recommendations or suggestions. I have told him what I wanted the iPad for. In the end I didn't buy the model most fit for my purposes, because I'm just not that familiar with iPad models and really would have used some more help. I found out after 2 days and I took the iPad back for an upgrade. Contrary to what Apple does, all the staff did was to tell me that I cannot get a refund/exchange. There was never any mention that I cannot return the iPad anywhere I can find in store. The staff didn't mention it. (I had cashiers at other stores remind me before taking my money, that I cannot get a refund even for goods costing a few hundred yen, but not for this?!) I contacted Apple in Japan and they told me Yodobashi should be able to refund me if they wished, so I went back again with a page written in Japanese explaining my situation, and they still gave me the same answer, that I cannot get a refund. Is it because I'm a tourist? One of the staff explained they never take returns when the box is opened, but couldn't they have made this clear before buying? Particularly when their policies are so different from Apple. They've made it obvious they won't remedy this. After this experience I don't think I'll buy anything again from Yodobashi. Some pretty unhelpful staff who aren't concerned about helping you get what you need. What they care about is to get your money and keep it.

The signs are in view everywhere offering points galore or discounts usually up to 10% but the story soon changes once you get to the cash and have paid for you purchases. This has consistently happened to me. I chose my new iPad Pro and proceeded to the cash register only to find that my iPad Pro and all other high end Apple products were not eligible for for points! I asked why but was told that Apple products are simply not eligible for points at Yodobashi Camera. On October 6th of this year (2021) I bought a Thermarest sleeping pad and Solomon walking shoes. The sports department had signs everywhere promoting a 10% sale. I took my goods to the cash and paid for them and looked at the receipt … where was the 10% discount! I asked the cashier and was told that Thermarest purchases were no eligible for 10% discounts … they gave me a 1% discount! When I asked to have my Solomon shoes packed in a plastic bag rather than the bulky cardboard box the cashier complied but stated that my shoes were no longer eligible for the return policy! All of these exceptions were explained to me only after I had paid for my purchases, I had to refer to the caveats after the fact. This is a very bad policy. As a foreigner shopping at this store and many others in Japan you're often perceived as a customer who will most likely not be a return customer, a short term visitor to Japan, so your purchasing rights are often circumvented. Double check carefully whether you as a foreign customer are granted the same rights as Japanese customers. Let The Buyer Beware.

Tip for consumers:
Be very careful at the cash register.
