I'm reading all the negative reviews about GreenGeeks support and I just can't agree. My experience with their support was excellent. Truly professional and efficient. I have two major deal-breaker problems with them, however. I opened a Pro account (the middle one) with unlimited domain names and quickly learned that additional domain name document root folders are stored INSIDE your public_html folder, which is ridiculous. My other webhost (WHC) stores each additional domain name's document root at the same level as your public_html folder, which means nobody can get access to any other domain's files by having access to your main folder. For example, with GreenGeeks you can type into a browser: www.test1.com/www.test2.com/index.html and actually load he file from the 2nd domain. Mickey-mouse.
My next problem is how they advertise on GreenGeeks.CA (not.com) how they are "Canada's #1 Green Energy Web Hosting Provider" and the heading above their hosting plan prices says "CANADIAN WEB HOSTING PLANS". Unfortunately all of the prices shown are in US Dollars and it doesn't indicate anywhere this is the case. It's totally deceptive. Even during checkout I had no idea I was paying in USD (which costs about 35% more than CAD). They should be ashamed of themselves for this alone. It wasn't until I received my payment receipt in the mail that I knew I just paid in American bucks.
My third problem is how it's tricky to cancel and it's impossible to configure a registered domain name to not auto-renew. This is the first webhost that I've seen in 25 years that doesn't allow you to set your domain names to manual or auto renew. If you don't want your domain to auto-renew you must open a ticket and manually ask for them to set your domain to not auto-renew. Same goes for your actual hosting account. What a nightmare for those of us with many domain names. That being said, the cancellation process was fairly painless. It's just extra hoops they put up to jump though in an effort to keep those credit card charges going through, IMO. If for any reason I received ongoing charges on my card I will do something I've never had to do in 35 years of having a credit card: chargeback. VISA will give me my money back because I have ample proof of cancellation of services. I don't expect this to be an issue based on how professional GreenGeeks was with me during the cancellation process.
I was switching away from my regular webhost, but now that I know how deceptive and sneaky the competition can be, I'm now staying put. I took my host for granted; didn't appreciate them. I do now! A few extra bucks a month is totally worth it!
Stay away from GreenGeeks.
