Let the Buyer Beware: The Clarksville, TN, Peddler Revue

I needed someone to do a bit of handyman type work so I took out an ad in the weekly Peddler.
There were several responses. I picked the gentleman who seemed to have the most experience and also offered the best price.

A few weeks went by and everything seemed to be going fine. I felt fortunate to have found such a good worker.

One day my handyman stopped in to see me on his way home. He had planned to paint my storage shed the next week, as we had discussed. He was going to Metropolis, Illinois, for the weekend, he continued, to celebrate the birthday of his mother-in-law. Could I advance payment of the price of the paint, roller, and brushes, he asked.

Of course, I said, and added that I wished the birthday group a happy weekend with Superman as I calculated the amount he had requested and wrote the check.

A smug smile came over his face as he rushed to the door, still clutching his check.

"Never trust anyone whose name you get out of the Peddler," he muttered as he bolted out.

I never saw him again.

Later one of my regular helpers told me two ladders were missing.
