My Porter-Coble circular saw sparked and smelled like Hell, then died. I only had to replace one of the brushes-- it had un-even wear and looked like it had been smeared. I'm guessing those magnets are some kind of polymer w/ imbedded magnetic particles, and extreme heat (from friction w/ armature) can deform them. Works FINE now.
