Welcome to the West Kirby art classes run by Joe McGillivray, and the land diversity forgot. Speaking to other artists, and various staff, one gets the impression very few, if any black or disabled, or trans people, enter the building. When you ask if West Kirby arts has a diversity policy in place, you might well be speaking Martian. This is a 1951 time warp. They act as if the equality act does not exist. I am told the class does sometimes use mature portrait models, so at least they are not completely age-ist as well. One saving grace. If you inquire, they refuse to tell you how many male, black, or disabled portrait models they have used. What are they hiding? How bad can it be?
The terms and conditions of this website demand honesty. It should be a simple matter for West Kirby Arts to reveal the facts, what variety and diversity of models do they use exactly? Let them give an honest answer? And why oh why oh why, do they seem so completely hell bent on NOT introducing an official diversity policy? Why possible motive could they have?
