How do I measure sliding glass doors for roman shades?

If I am using existing hardware for roller shades, do I measure from bracket to bracket?

My cordless black out shades are no longer going up all the way. They go up about 12 inches and then stop. When I pull them down all the way, it sounds like the string on the left side is catching. I have no idea how to fix this. The blinds are less than 2 years old.
