Scam! Speaking from personal experience! They used an application on the computer that claimed I had 712 issues with my computer. When I called geek squad hey idicated that I had no viruses or security issues won't computer. I trust geek squad more.

Definitely a scam!
My computer locked up and they popped up saying I was hacked and I should call their number immediately because I had a serious virus.
I was told I needed two different things which totalled $430.
I figured it was a scam and luckily the charges did not go through and I did get my money back.
This service is outsourced to India.
Your family is right and see if you can get your money back.
Also go somewhere like Best Buy to the geek squad to make sure support buddy is not in your computer.
