They said they had recovered some crypto that I'd lost to an investment scam a few years ago. All I had to do was sign an agreement to pay them 5% of the recovered funds once they were in my bank account. I felt a bit unsure but thought let's see.
James helped me open a new crypto wallet an shortly afterwards it showed that they had sent me just over £29,000 in Etherium. Next James said that I had to send some crypto to my new wallet to create liquidity as they had been recovered funds. He said it's not really a payment, it will be in my own wallet so I'd get it back when I did the final transfer to my bank. Against my better judgement I did what he asked and saw the balance in my new wallet increase. It all looked fine. Then James said I needed to send more, a percentage of the recovered funds, for reasons I didn't understand. I refused, he wanted more than I had in my bank account so I made an excuse and told him to call the next day so I could think about it.
Luckily my sister teaches at a specialist computer college and she put me in touch with a student who was very knowledgable when it came to crypto. I called him and within a few minutes he had established that the while thing was a scam. He found that the funds I'd been sent were not recorded on the blockchain. Not only that, they had managed to take the money that I'd sent to the wallet yet it still showed I had everything in that wallet.
I'm a pensioner, James knew I had very little money yet he helped me practically empty my bank account while he pretended to be helping me. I'm not particularly proud to be sharing my experience but this experience has been very upsetting and ruined my finances. I want people to know about these scammers because I couldn't really find out anything online that helped me tell if they were genuine.
If you get a call just hang up!
Update:
They still contact me but each time it's someone different. They just ignore me when I point out things that just don't make sense and change the subject when I ask for documentary evidence about my 'case' which according to their own website should be available. The emails I send to their support address are never answered.
It is all very stressful for me.
