About Me

Mr. Fixit. Now retired, but still fixing. Even as a child, I took things apart just to see how they worked. After growing up, I could put them back together as well!

How I Can Help

Expertise in computer hardware and software. Designed and built several "personal" computers from scratch, mostly as a hobbyist. Repaired computers which had been made worse by the likes of Geek Squad. Employed as analyst and programmer, with emphasis on data analysis. Strong believer in preventative maintenance. Most mechanical devices last a very long time with proper care.

This was the only place that stocked what I wanted. I got screwed on price, but had little choice since nowhere else had what I needed.

Target claimed my order would be shipped via 2 Day Delivery. Then they shipped it via Surepost. Surepost is a slow, discounted shipping method that usually takes around a week. First it goes via UPS, as a low priority package. Next, it's given to the post office, which also treats the package as low priority. I've tried using Walmart, with similar results. They are trying to compete with Amazon, by lying. Even without Prime, Amazon doesn't pull this kind of crap. IMO, they would be better off telling the truth. Now I'm mad not only because my package is late, but because they lied, too.

Tip for consumers:

Just glance at all the bad reviews. That should tell you to not even consider this stuff. I wish I had never heard of it. Anything I can say has already been said by all the other reviewers, so let me close by saying...

DO NOT BUY THIS CRAP!

IF YOU USE IT, YOU'LL BE SORRY

P.S. The "positive" reviews are mostly shills writing fakes to offset all the bad reviews.

Ordered what were supposed to be chocolate covered strawberries. But the coating didn't taste like chocolate, so I checked the ingredients–NO CHOCOLATE! Mostly sugar and palm oil, plus a bit of cocoa powder. To top it off, the strawberries were as green as grass. YUCK!

So $50 for a dozen bitter strawberries dipped in UNchocolate.

WHAT A RIPOFF!

Tip for consumers:
We all have cell phones and internet access. We don't need to order from big corporations ripping us off. Just find a florist or candy store near where you want your gift to go, and call them directly. Most are more than happy to help you. Avoid 1-800-Flowers, and you'll save a bundle and get much better service.

You don't need or want to deal with Greedy Corporate America.

IFixit used to provide excellent repair guides. But they've become needlessly convoluted. Including steps for strange, unnecessary procedures, for otherwise simple repairs. Browsing YouTube for alternatives, you can find much more helpful, straightforward instructions. I can think of no logical reason for iFixit to recommend so many steps for otherwise simple repairs, except maybe it's a way for them to make money on parts. The photos are still helpful though. High resolution, to clearly see the tiny connections and such.

IFixit sells overpriced, substandard batteries. Furthermore, the company does not stand behind their warranty, and will not refund customer charges unless forced to do so. Even then, iFixit will charge mysterious, hidden fees so as not to return all of a customer's money.

I was once a big supporter of iFixit. But that was then, and this is now. I still use a toolkit I bought from them. It's excellent. But buying more stuff from them now? NO WAY!

Tip for consumers:
Do not buy replacement batteries from third parties, including iFixit. You may believe you’re saving money, but you’re not. Even original manufacturers have trouble consistently getting good quality batteries. So imagine the quality of third-party ones, from unknown sources, without any reputation to uphold.

I used to buy third-party batteries, but no longer. It’s not worth the risk. Remember the Samsung cell phones catching fire? Now, think hard whether you really want a cheap, no-name one.

This website reminds me a lot of Wikipedia. While much of the information given is useful, and much of it accurate, it isn't well researched. In fact, Wikipedia is better researched, more accurate, and less biased. Wikipedia usually lists multiple references. HowStuffWorks typically lists a single reference, if that. A single reference isn't a reliable method for accuracy. Furthermore, HowStuffWorks is packed with opinions. Unlike Wikipedia, there is no way for readers to comment on inaccuracies, let alone get them corrected.

While HowStuffWorks is handy for novices to get a general idea, the text should not be taken as a literal fact. You can learn the gist of things, but don't count on the text for thoroughness or accuracy.
